Background of the study

Digital media consumption has transformed the dynamics of family communication, altering the way family members interact and share information. In Abuja, increased access to smartphones, social media platforms, and online content has introduced new communication patterns that both facilitate and challenge traditional family interactions (Umeh, 2023). While digital media can enhance connectivity among family members separated by geographic distances, it can also lead to reduced face-to-face interactions and a decline in the quality of personal relationships. Digital platforms offer a range of communication tools, from instant messaging to video calls, which have redefined how families maintain relationships. However, issues such as screen dependency, reduced attention spans, and the potential for miscommunication present significant challenges. This study evaluates the effects of digital media consumption on family communication in Abuja, exploring how technology influences familial bonds, communication effectiveness, and emotional well-being, while also addressing the potential pitfalls of overreliance on digital interactions (Afolabi, 2024).

Statement of the problem

Despite the benefits of digital media in connecting families, there is growing concern that excessive reliance on digital communication may weaken traditional familial interactions. In Abuja, the shift toward digital media has resulted in less direct communication, contributing to misunderstandings and emotional distance among family members. The challenges of balancing digital and face-to-face communication necessitate an evaluation of how these media impact family dynamics and overall relationship quality (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

To evaluate the impact of digital media consumption on family communication in Abuja.

To identify challenges arising from digital interactions within families.

To propose strategies to balance digital and traditional communication methods.

Research questions

How does digital media consumption affect family communication in Abuja?

What challenges do families face due to increased digital media use?

What measures can improve the balance between digital and face-to-face communication in families?

Significance of the study

This study is significant as it explores the impact of digital media on family dynamics, providing insights into how technology reshapes communication patterns. The findings will help families, educators, and policymakers develop strategies to foster healthy communication and maintain strong familial bonds amid the digital revolution (Umeh, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study

This study is limited to the evaluation of digital media consumption and its effects on family communication in Abuja. It focuses exclusively on family interactions and does not consider broader social media influences. Limitations include self-reporting biases and differences in digital literacy among family members.

Definitions of terms
